| Unsalted butter, softened | 2 tablespoons |
| Optional: Honey or olive oil | 1 tablespoon |
Directions
Preparing the Dough
Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, mix the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let sit for about 5 minutes, until frothy. If it doesn’t froth, start over with fresh yeast.
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk together 3 ½ cups flour and the salt.
Combine Ingredients
Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Add the yeast mixture and softened butter (plus honey or olive oil if using). Mix until the dough comes together.
Knead the Dough
Transfer to a floured surface and knead for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add extra flour if needed.
First Rise
Prepare for Rising
Place the kneaded dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, until doubled in size.
